What to Pack for Tuscany in the Fall
Fall Tuscany asks a specific question of your suitcase: can it handle a 42-degree foggy morning, a 60-degree sunny lunch, cobblestones older than your country, and a long dinner where Italians have quietly out-dressed you, all in the same day?
It can, if you pack for the day's arc instead of for single outfits. Here is the list we send our own November travelers, with the reasoning, because the reasoning is what stops the overpacking.
The weather you are packing for
October and November days typically run from around 40 degrees at dawn to the mid-50s and low 60s by afternoon. Sun and rain trade shifts, sometimes hourly. Stone buildings hold cold, so churches and cellars are chilly even on warm days, and evenings drop fast once the sun goes. In short: not cold, never hot, always changing. One packing principle solves all of it, and you already know its name.
Layers, specifically these
Skip the one heavy coat; it will be too much at lunch and not enough at dawn. Build instead: three or four long-sleeve tops in one color family, two real sweaters, merino if you have it, because it is warm, light, and forgives multiple wears, one packable warm layer such as a light down jacket, and one waterproof shell with a hood that fits over the rest. That stack covers every hour Tuscany will throw at you, and the pieces recombine into a different-looking outfit daily.
Bottoms: two or three pairs of comfortable pants, dark travels best on trips full of trattoria sauces, plus tights under a dress if you are a dress person. Denim is fine everywhere but dries slowly if rained on; one non-denim pair earns its place.
Shoes decide how much fun you have
Read this section twice. Tuscan towns are vertical and cobbled: Lucca's lanes, Siena's slopes, farm tracks if you are truffle hunting with the dogs. The shoes that survive them are broken-in walking shoes or sneakers with genuine tread, worn on the plane. Add one pair of flat boots or nicer walk-able shoes for dinners, and stop there.
What fails, every single trip: new shoes of any kind, thin ballet flats that transmit every cobble, and anything with a real heel, which between the stones and the hills becomes a comedy nobody enjoys. Italian women wear beautiful sneakers with everything; follow their lead and your feet will end the trip on speaking terms with you.
The dinner question, answered honestly
You do not need formal clothes. You need what Italians call figura, looking pulled-together, which in practice means: dark pants or a dress, a nice sweater or blouse, one scarf that makes the outfit, and small earrings. The scarf is the whole trick. It weighs nothing, takes no space, and converts your daytime clothes into your dinner clothes at the doorway of the restaurant. Pack one and plan to buy another there, Italy makes better scarves than the rest of us anyway.
The small things that matter more than they look
A crossbody bag that zips, for market days. Sunglasses, fall light is low and golden and directly in your eyes at the good hours. A packable tote for market hauls, pecorino, that olive oil you swore you would only buy one bottle of. A European plug adapter, and one multi-port charger so your phone, watch, and reader share a single outlet. Any prescriptions in original containers, plus your basic remedies; small-town farmacie are lovely but why spend an afternoon there. And leave a quarter of your suitcase empty. November is olive oil and wine season, and you are not coming home with only stories. Ask us about shipping wine before you fill the suitcase with bottles; there are better ways.
What to leave home
The umbrella, a hooded shell beats it in wind and leaves a hand free for gelato, which is a year-round right. The third pair of nice shoes. The hair dryer, hotels have them. The just-in-case formal outfit; the occasion is a myth. And the fear of repeating outfits, the group is repeating theirs too, and by day three everyone has publicly bonded over it.
Packed right, you disappear into the trip
That is the real reason to get this right. When the bag is light and the layers work, you stop thinking about clothes entirely, and your attention goes where it belongs: fog on the olive groves, pepper in the new oil, the long table getting louder and warmer each night.
Our Tuscany trip runs in exactly this season, small group, villa near Lucca, unpack once. If you are wondering whether your knees, your wardrobe, or your nerve are up to it, they are, and you can ask us anything on a free call. Bring the scarf. We will handle the rest.
