The Patagonia Experience: At the Edge of the World
Eight days on Chile's far southern tip, with a maximum of 10 women. Fly over the Strait of Magellan to Navarino Island, sail the Beagle Channel's glacier route and walk among the penguins of Magdalena Island.
Patagonia, beyond the usual routes
The corner of Patagonia very few people ever reach.
Most trips to Patagonia stop at the famous peaks. This one keeps going, south across the Strait of Magellan to Navarino Island and Puerto Williams, the southernmost town in the world.
Here the mountains drop straight into the Beagle Channel, the forests are older than anything you have walked through, and the land is the ancestral home of the Yaghan people, one of the most resilient cultures on earth.
Four nights at an eco-lodge on the island, with an outdoor hot tub waiting at the end of the glacier day. Three nights in Punta Arenas, where we finish with penguins in the morning and horses in the afternoon.
This is not a hiking expedition. It is Patagonia in comfort, with the scenery, the wildlife and the people at the center, shared with a small circle of women who came for the same thing.
What you will actually do
Glaciers, penguins, ancient forests. And a hot tub at the end of it.
Puerto Williams, the southernmost town on Earth
A private walking tour with a local host, then the Martin Gusinde Anthropological Museum, the world's southernmost museum, and the story of the Yaghan people.
A safari through forests in miniature
Magnifying glass in hand at Omora Ethnobotanical Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve home to about five percent of the world's mosses and lichens. Then a cooking class with king crab, lamb and the flavors of the Beagle Channel.
The sub-Antarctic forest
An expert guide sets the pace through ancient lenga, coigue and ñirre trees, with views of the Beagle Channel and the Dientes de Navarino. The only soundtrack is the forest.
The glacier route by boat
A full day on the Beagle Channel past towering glaciers, watching for seabirds, sea lions and sometimes whales, with a stop to meet the community at Kanasaka. Back at the lodge, the hot tub.
Walking with penguins on Magdalena Island
An early start and a short crossing to Magdalena Island, then an hour on the trail among the penguin colony. It is every bit as charming as it sounds.
On horseback above the Strait of Magellan
An afternoon ride at Agua Fresca Bay through wetlands and lenga forest to a viewpoint over the strait, Tierra del Fuego and Dawson Island. All riding equipment is provided.
